As most of you know Iceland is not a cheap country when it comes to accommodation. Camping can be a great way for keeping costs low. After all it is the nature Iceland is famous for so why not spend most of your time in nature? Iceland has many beautiful campsites along the ring road which are all clearly indicated, you can’t miss them. You can find some campsites which offer great views and facilities. All of them on a unique location.

1. Hamragardar

This campsite is right next to the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall close to the main road. In summer it can get busy, but you should be able to find a good spot. The location is what makes this one a must stay. You can find Gljúfrabúi waterfall right in front of the campsite which literally means “The one that lives within the canyon”. It’s one of the most beautiful waterfalls in all of Iceland. Get up early and avoid the crowds at both of these waterfalls. It will definitely make for an awesome experience.

The facilities here are not that great but the location totally make up for it. You can find a shared kitchen with everything you’ll need. However in case of bad weather it can get crowded in there. There are only 2 showers which costs 100 ISK for 1 minute of shower time and 4 toilets for an estimated 300 guests in high season so you might have to wait in line.

2. Seydisfjordur

Situated in the center of Seyðisfjörður at the innermost point of the Seyðisfjörður Fjord you can find this campsite. It’s one of the most picturesque villages in all of Iceland. During the summer months it can get crowded on Tuesday and Wednesday when the ferry is on its summer schedule.

The surroundings of this camping ground are amazing. You’ll see small waterfalls everywhere in this fjord. Not to mention the beautiful village itself with the rainbow road you might have seen on a photograph. The road leading here is covered in fog often, but it’s one of the most beautiful roads in all of Iceland. It could also be seen in the famous longboard scene from the movie “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”.

If you’re travelling in off season remember to check the opening times of the campsites. Most campsites are open from the end of May till the end of September. If the campsites are closed it is often allowed to still stay there overnight but you won’t have access to most of the facilities. It is only logical to clean up after yourself to preserve the beautiful nature of Iceland.
